We invite you to share what food means to you!
What we’re looking for from you:
A short story around 100–300 words about a culturally significant food that captures a specific memory or experience. This could be a dish that connects you to family, homeland, ancestry, celebration, or chosen community. It might be something you grew up eating, something you learned to cook later in life, or something that helped you reconnect with culture. Please make sure not to include personal details you wouldn’t want available to the public (i.e. the name of your city).
Feel free to include your recipe with your submission if you would like to share it. Recipes can be traditional, adapted, approximate, or written the way they were passed down to you. Including a recipe is completely optional, but we would love to celebrate the flavours and techniques that bring your story to life.
An artist will create an illustration based on your story to be published alongside it in our colouring book. These will be made available by donation, either as a downloadable version for printing or as a physical copy. We will also be reaching out to local book shops, schools, and community spaces to share these stories of cultural connection.
Story-tellers may choose to remain anonymous or share their name or “pen name”, pronouns, and any physical characteristics or specific imagery they would like included in the illustration (race, physical characteristics etc, or “Please include my grandma’s hands kneading dough”) in their submission. If no name or pronouns are included, we will default to they/them pronouns when referring to the storyteller. Before going to print, we will share a draft of your page to ensure it reflects your experience.
Contributors will receive a free copy of the book mailed to them, and credit by name if they so choose.
